Creative Alternatives is a nonprofit organization based in the Central Valley of California. Our primary activities include the operation of residential care homes for children, placement of children in private homes and running nonpublic ED schools. Creative Alternatives has been designed to provide what its name implies… an alternative to the institutionalization of children. Our programs are individualized to meet the needs of each child.
Creative Alternatives was founded in 1976 by Ron and Mary Phillips in Hughson, California. The focus of the organization, then and now, was to provide a nurturing environment for troubled children. In 1988 the leadership of Creative Alternatives was assumed by J.A. Novack as Executive Director until his retirement in December 2000. His position was filled by Blane Franca who served as Executive Director until his retirement in 2008. In 2009, Joey Novack was appointed Executive Director. The growth of Creative Alternatives has continued in an orderly fashion since its inception. We currently have group homes in four communities throughout Stanislaus and Merced Counties. Our Foster Family Program and Nonpublic School Program have also experienced a similar rate of planned growth. Our 240+ employees, many of whom are local college students, have provided us with a committed and capable work force. Many have gone on to careers in Child Psychology, Criminal Justice, Education and other associated fields. For over 30 years, Creative Alternatives has continued to be a force for intelligent, caring and competent service to troubled children.
